Beloved of God,
This week’s gospel took us to the Jordan, where Jesus steps into the water and before he has healed, preached, or proved anything, a voice from heaven says, “This is my beloved.” Not powerful. Not impressive. Beloved.
That word feels especially heavy this week, in a world where too many lives are reduced to arguments, headlines, or political positions. Where it is easier to decide who is right than to stop and remember that every person is first a human being, made in God’s image, worthy of dignity and care.
Belovedness is not something we earn. It is something God gives. And once we know ourselves as beloved, we are also called to learn how to see others that way.
So here is the question I am holding today: How are we being invited to show up for the marginalized and the most vulnerable? Not only for our family and friends, not only for the people who already love us or can repay our kindness, but for those who have no leverage, no voice, no way to give anything back. For the people we might never otherwise know, but with whom God asks us to align our lives.
Because that is what Jesus does. He steps into the water with everyone. He stands where the pain is. He refuses to let anyone be invisible or disposable.
What would it look like this week to live as people who truly believe that every human being is beloved? Who do we need to notice? Who do we need to stand beside? Where might God be asking us to widen our circle of care?
May we remember who we are: beloved. And may we learn, again and again, to see the belovedness in one another.
Blessings,
