A Michael Minute

Sept. 29, 2025
This past Sunday I preached on the story of Lazarus and the rich man from Luke’s gospel—a story about the chasm that forms when we ignore one another and build gates instead of bridges. I talked about how the Episcopal Church, and especially St. Mary’s, is called to be a community where that chasm is closed, where Lazarus isn’t left outside but is welcomed in, where we live into God’s vision of a shared table.

That got me thinking about how our parish life is a little like an orchestra. No single instrument can play a symphony on its own. It takes strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion – and, yes, even the triangle! Each has its own part to play, and when all the pieces come together, the result is beautiful music that none of us could make alone. In the same way, our life at St. Mary’s is made up of many voices, gifts, and offerings – some bold and brassy, some gentle and steady, all essential.

Last weekend’s Ministry Fair was a wonderful reminder of that truth. Tables filled with opportunities to serve, share, and grow showed us how many ways there are to add our voices to the music of this community. If you didn’t get a chance to explore, I encourage you to reach out and discover a ministry that excites you. Your part matters—and without it, the music isn’t complete.

This is also the perfect moment to say how grateful I am for Kay Outwin, who faithfully chose hymns and made sure we had organists and pianists while we waited for our new Minister of Music to arrive. Kay, your steady hand and care for our worship life kept the music going, and we are deeply thankful. I also thank our various guest organists and pianists who accompanied us through the summer.

Now, with joy, we welcome Dr. Mijin Choi as our new Minister of Music. Mijin brings not only talent and skill but also a collaborative spirit that will help our community keep making music together – literally and figuratively. I hope you will join me in offering her a warm St. Mary’s welcome as she helps us lift our hearts and voices in praise.

Like an orchestra, we sound best when we are listening to one another, supporting one another, and remembering that each part matters. May our life together continue to be a witness to the harmony God intends for the world.

Faithfully,
