A Michael Minute

Group of parishioners from St. Mary's in front of a cathedral in England during a cathedrals pilgrimage trour

April 27, 2026

Dear Friends,

I’m just back from our Cathedral Pilgrimage in southern England. The cathedrals were breathtaking, of course, the beauty, the music, the sheer weight of prayer held in those places over centuries. But what stays with me just as much is what happened among us along the way. Somewhere between coach rides, meals, laughter, and wandering old cloisters together, friendships deepened. That may be one of pilgrimage’s quiet gifts. You set out to visit holy places and discover God has also been at work among the people traveling beside you.

I was also struck by how familiar many of our conversations felt with those we met in the Church of England. Their stories sounded a lot like ours. They wrestle with many of the same questions we do, they rejoice in many of the same things. There was comfort in that. Sometimes we can imagine our challenges are uniquely ours, but they’re not. Nor are our hopes. Again and again, I was reminded that we are part of something much larger—a worldwide communion, yes, but even more, a living fellowship in Christ

There were moments of awe in those ancient spaces, but there were also moments of simple delight: shared jokes, unexpected conversations, cups of tea, country lanes, the rhythm of praying together. Those things matter too. They become part of the grace of the journey.

Thank you for your prayers while we were away. We felt them. Truly. And thank you to those who made the pilgrimage such a joy to share. I have a feeling we’ll be telling stories from this trip for a while.

And it is good to be home, especially with spring arriving in earnest. I came back noticing blossoms and birdsong with fresh eyes. Spring is springing, indeed. After seeing England greening into life, it feels fitting to return in Eastertide and watch resurrection announce itself here too.

I’m grateful for the journey, and glad to be back with you.

Faithfully,
